BASIC ESSAY WRITING

This workshop will show you how to improve your basic writing skills by emphasizing clarity, accuracy and structure. The first half of the course will address fundamental flaws, cover the basics of grammar, vocabulary and syntax along with practical exercises, instructive discussion, and constructive critique. In the second half the focus will be on starting, organizing, and ending your essay, effectively and economically. Assignments will be given at regular intervals. Used as writing guides will be Plain Style by C. Lasch, and Five Fast Steps to Better Writing by B. Florio Graham. At the outset of the workshop, participants will be asked for a sample of their writing for assessment. Students following a degree or diploma program may be advised to take this course.
